Artist Aster Guinness and Sam on a yoga retreat in Sri Lanka 2016

Hello World.

My name is Sam Ra.

My yoga practice started in 1994 when my friend James Moores gave me yoga classes for Christmas. Going to The Life Centre in Notting Hill changed everything for me, not instantly, but over the course of the next 10 years.

I trained at the Sivananda Yoga and Vedanta Ashram, Kerala, India in 2003. Having spent three months in Mysore practicing Ashtanga Vinyasa, and a month in Sri Lanka meditating at various vipassana retreats.

After teacher training I followed Swami Sitaramananda to California where I lived, studied and taught for three months at the Sivananda Farm, Grass Valley. On my return to London I taught yoga full-time.

In 2006 I travelled to Boulder, Colorado. I studied with Richard Freeman and Mary Taylor at the Yoga Workshop; returning later in the year to complete their Ashtanga Vinyasa Teachers’ Intensive.

For several years I had regular classes at The Life Centre, Notting Hill and Islington. I specialise working with individuals and small groups. I have also taught at Goldman Sachs, Deutche Bank and for Disney.

My classes emphasise attentive alignment, accessible sequencing and a calm, patient approach. I prefer teaching private lessons and small regular groups because they allow me to get to know each student’s body, breath and personality. This helps me tailor classes so movement feels safe, effective and enjoyable.

What to Expect.

  • Private classes: One-to-one attention, fully personalised programmes addressing injury, mobility, strength or specific goals.

  • Small groups: Consistent, intimate sessions that build trust and steady progress; I adapt the class to the needs of those present.

  • Teaching style: Clear verbal cues, hands-on adjustments when welcome, and options that respect different abilities.

  • Focus areas: Posture, functional mobility, breath work and mindful sequencing with attention to alignment and ease.

Suitable for

  • Complete beginners looking for a supportive start

  • Those recovering from injury or wanting therapeutic input

  • Students seeking refinement in their practice

  • People who prefer a steady, personalised learning environment

If you’d like to book a private or join a small regular group, tell me about your experience, any injuries or concerns, and the times that suit you. I’ll suggest the best way to work together.
